relevant cartoon letters Condoning the illegal entry of immigrants into the United States exacerbates a variety of problems for immigrants and our society. These immigrants are unprotected and have an unsure future. Their shadowy existence allows them to be victimized by unsrupulous employers and criminals. Their living conditions set a new low for workers in the US. If the US needs more workers and citizens of other countries want them the laws should reflect that. The current system is useful only for criminals and greedy entrepreneurs. The system should be pressured to create laws that properly meet the needs of workers and employers. DANGERS FOR ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS Illegal immigration into the US becomes deadly for some of immigrants and miserable for many more. Those who survive are often blackmailed or sold into actual slavery. Illegal immigrants from Mexico are typically charged more than $1,000 to be smuggled into the US with the promise of high paying jobs that don't exist. Instead of the $40+ a day that they are typically promised they often receive only $2 a day for cleaning, or similar jobs, at Wal-Mart® and other companies. If they survive the trip, they are often held hostage while their families are blackmailed for additional funds. Other illegal immigrants often become vitual slaves. Boys and girls often become sex slaves, chained to their beds and murdered if they try to escape. These are not prostitutes because they are not paid. Those who condone illegal immigration have opened the door to a return of slavery to the US. With no controls on immigration, illegal immigrants are often the ultimate victims of the system. BBC recently did a story about a Mexican who had been promised a job in a restaurant by the group that arranged her illegal entry into the US. She paid her handlers $2,500 to get her into the US where she was abducted and forced to have sex with 32 men a day seven days a week as a sexual slave. This case is not unique. There are hundreds of other known cases and likely hundreds more unreported. It is easy to force illegal immigrants into slavery since they are undocumented. Those who support the continuation of illegal immigration bear much of the responsibility for these conditions. Because they are illegal there is no effective way to protect them. Historically, immigrants have been the primary victims of immigrant gangs, which are usually comprised of illegal immigrants. COSTS FOR US TAXPAYERS There are over 11,000,000 undocumented illegal aliens in the United States and more enter every day. The INS does not have the staff necessary to track them or deport them. In some parts of the county they make up as much as 28% of the population. In some prison systems as many as 24% of the prisoners are immigrants, causing tremendous taxpayer expense. The estimated annual costs of illegal immigration to U.S. taxpayers are approximately:
CRIME AND TERRORISM Unlike citizens and legal immigrants, illgal aliens are not registered or identified. Citizens and legal aliens are required to have identification. Recent illegal immigrants have included serial killer Angel Recendiz and 9/11 terrorists Hani Hanjour and Khalid Almihdar Illegal immigrants take jobs from taxpaying US citizens. Job seeking legal immigrants face a myriad of federal restrictions on their employment not faced by illegal aliens. Illegal immigration is unfair to American citizens and to the immigrants who go to great lengths to enter this country legally. As with other countries, the US needs to document all of its visitors. As long as America leaves open the flood gates of illegal immigration we are vulnerable to more terrorists attacks. Only a few terrorists need to be among the thousands of undocumented immigrants who enter the US every week to create serious threats to our security. Border states in Mexico are largely controlled by criminal organizations. The majority of gangs in the US are immigrants. Our federal, state, and local governments need to establish, and implement, a plan which registers all foreign workers. Illegal immigration is supported by powerful lobbies that spend millions of dollars a year to influence legislators. Without comparable opposition these groups will continue to expand the threat of uncontrolled immigration. These groups include:
